Ceramics

See what’s in the SHOP

This journey really started many years ago when I saw a mug at my friend's house. It was an Astier De Villate. The "Simple Mug". It was flat white with super thin walls and it felt amazing to hold. The weight, the handle, the perfect amount of glaze with the clay peeking through the rim. From then on any mug I saw I would analyze. Was the handle in the right place? Too heavy? Was it trying too hard? What gave it its magic? And the best part, flipping it over to check out that makers mark on the bottom. For me these were pieces of art. Art that was usable and had to also be considered as such.

Fast forward to early 2021 when I decided to take my first ceramics class. I was instantly drawn to it. I've been a graphic designer for 25 years doing mostly packaging and identity so visually I drew from my design sense but I'm also good with my hands. I’ve also worked as a line cook on and off over the years so that hand/eye coordination was there and, just like in the kitchen, I moved with ninja speed - every movement thought out and deliberate. I loved the feel of clay in the same way I loved the feel of food and now I was just switching out kitchen tools for clay tools. I missed working with my hands. Pottery allowed me to combine my two passions and I fell in love.
